For too long, SPF has borne the label of the least exciting (albeit necessary) step in our morning skincare routine while still acting as our number one advocate for the health of our skin. Thankfully, with the introduction of SPF mineral brushes, the stigma of this underappreciated health and beauty weapon is shifting. Gone are the days of the thick, chalky paste we associate with sunscreen. SPF is in, and ever-advancing formulations are giving it the rockstar reputation it deserves.

Why SPF really is your skin's best friend:

Not only does sunscreen reduce the chance of skin cancer by up to 50%, but an added benefit is also that it seriously prevents aging. Did you know that up to 90% of skin aging is due to sun damage

As our body’s largest organ, our skin takes in the good as well as the bad. With our help though, it can filter out some of the bad. The CDC fills us in further on the importance of using SPF:

“Taking steps to protect yourself from the sun is a year-round responsibility. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Typically, [basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer] form on the head, face, neck, hands, and arms because these body parts are the most exposed to UV radiation. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade.” (CDC.gov)

Why the beauty industry geeking out over this new form of SPF:

SPF mineral brushes are the latest trending form of sun protection because they are a natural and super-convenient way to protect the skin. Our current fave is a tossup between Eminence’s Sun Defence Minerals and Jane Iredale’s Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen. Both are hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic organic minerals with a water-resistant sun protection factor of 30. (Each also gets bonus points for being vegan.)

Here's how to use it:

15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure, sweep the brush with gentle semi-circular strokes over skin to apply a thin layer of protecting minerals. Repeat for more opaque coverage. For best results, apply after moisturizer has completely absorbed into skin. Finish with your favorite hydration spray for a long-lasting finish. Reapply at least every 2 hours and reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating.
